Play count on ipod not updating

Just noticed that whenever I sync my i Pod to i Tunes, the play count/last played columns aren't updating even though i've played tons of songs since the last time I synced.
Also, whenever I listen to songs on i Tunes, both columns update for that song but whenever I close down i Tunes, it resets both columns back to what it was originally.
Songs featured on studio albums and compilations introduce another discrepancy, with one version having many more plays than another. Fw-300 .qstn-title #ya-trending-questions-show-more, #ya-related-questions-show-more #ya-trending-questions-more, #ya-related-questions-more /* DMROS */ .
